(a) whether Government is considering to provide free medicines through Government health facilities across the country;
(b) if so, the details thereof; and
(c) the cost of medicines provided through Government health facilities during
the last three years, State-wise?
ANSWER

(a) There is a mention in the 12th Five Year Plan document on health about providing free essential drugs in public facilities for reducing out of pocket expenditure on health care.
(b) The details have not been worked out.
(c) Public Health is a State subject. However, under National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), the Government of India provides financial assistance to the States after appraising the requirements projected by the State Governments in their Programme Implementation Plans (PIPs). Details of funds provided under NRHM, state wise, in the last three years for providing drugs is annexed.
